CHAPEL MILTON VIADUCT WORK
Alert re planed work for the Chapel Milton viaduct.
The viaduct is a 160-year-old Grade II listed structure. The work is needed to keep important freight services, that serve local quarries, moving for years to come.
What are we doing?
We will be strengthening the viaduct and repairing damage that has been sustained over time. We will also be installing waterproofing and drainage systems.
Between May and September, the team will be preparing the worksite and the railway so they can safely deliver the refurbishment of the viaduct. Our contractor, AMCOGiffen, and their subcontractors will be carrying out this work.
Provisionally, we are planning to carry out the main work over nine days at the end of August into September. The dates for these nine days are not confirmed yet, however we wanted to make sure you were informed at the earliest possible stage.
Our compound location is on the land opposite Chinley Chapel to the west of the railway. Over the coming months, our teams will be carrying out preparatory work.
From Thursday 8 May, the team will be on site to set up the compound. This will include installing welfare cabins and offices, generators, and skips. There will be deliveries to site during this time.
The land in the area needs to be levelled out to create a safe work site, so there will be plant and machinery in use so we can complete this work.
Our ecologists will be carrying out biodiversity and ecology studies. Although there is some requirements to remove vegetation (such as grass and hedges) during this work, we are committing to a biodiversity net gain of 10%. This means whatever is removed during the course of the work will be replaced with an additional 10%. We’re discussing with local landowners exactly what this will look like when the work is finished.
What this means for you
We want to be good neighbours, and we’ll do everything we can to keep noise levels to a minimum throughout the work.
There will be three-way traffic lights in place on Hayfield Road from 12 May – 17 October 2025 at the turn-off into the Wash Road, where Chinley Chapel is located. This is to make sure the entry to our worksite can be safely managed whilst allowing traffic to flow past conveniently.
There will be some overnight and weekend shifts in the area to prepare the railway for the main work:
